Preserving our ancient & veteran tree stock with solid management plans, ongoing assessments & approved arboricultural practices.

WHAT IS A VETERAN TREE?

Ancient trees or 'veteran trees' are deserved of the care and attention needed to preserve them for our future generations. A tree doesn't necessarily have to be ancient to be classified as veteran however. A tree may have developed interesting features over time, be it through storm damage or the natural progression of the tree's life cycle, resulting in an array of habitat features. Such trees hold important ecological significance.

VALUE OF VETERAN TREES

Their age alone speaks volumes, with most being several hundred years old, and some being a thousand years old or more. The irreplaceable benefits they offer are immense, from the sheer beauty of a battered veteran tree in a field, to the historic links they provide to our past.

Clues are held about land usage in a time gone by, providing hints of historic landscapes. Ancient pollards or even coppiced woodlands, show the importance of trees to local villagers as a sustainable source of income.

Of course, the ecological benefits cannot be overlooked, with veteran trees being host to a diverse array of wildlife. In an increasingly risk-averse society, where trees are felled when showing minimal signs of dieback, decaying wood habitat is becoming more threatened. Entire ecosystems rely on such deadwood, including fungi, invertebrates, mosses, reptiles, birds and more.

PRESERVING VETERAN TREES

Carrying out any work to a veteran tree should only be done by a suitably qualified and experienced arborist. Wark Forest Landscapes have over 30 years of experience managing veteran trees, spanning 2 generations. Nurturing our historic tree stock is at the heart of what we do.

Our management plans are based on sound principles, strictly adhering to best practice guidelines set out by leading arboriculturists in the area of veteran tree management.

HOW CAN WE HELP?

Deciding when or what to do to a veteran tree is a complex topic. Each tree has its own specific needs and any work is often largely dependant on its location. For example, a tree in a heavily trafficked area where members of the public are exposed to the hazard, requires a completely different approach and management plan to a tree situated in a field.

Wark Forest Landscapes take a holistic approach in dealing with veteran trees. Our number one priority is to preserve, with remedial works only being carried out after following a strict set of guidelines to help ensure the survival of our magnificent trees for future generations to enjoy as we do.
